I made a move like this recently for some throwaway blogs I had and now I’m wishing I had read this post first.

Try to register a domain and get paid hosting, download and install WordPress, choose a template and then import the posts and comments from Blogger. This way you don't get a SEO'ed blog, but something to experiment with. If you want me to assist (setting up the redirects, converting the links and all that) please drop me a line. BTW a script automating this process is doable, and there's a market, but I can't invest the time short-dated. The importer doesn't delete posts or comments in Blogger's database, but it doesn't copy all attributes.
