Once again, spot on writeing, and I agree with most of it. The problem I see is that as long as people are in pursuit of the mighty dollar, SEO guru's will ALWAYS find a way to "game" ANY algo they create. It's all in testing the methods to see what works or what doesn't. Until they come up with some kind of "smart" filtering strategy for the algorithms, it's going to be something that continues to happen. I wish them luck in finding some strategy that actually works. The results of late for some searches is just appalling.

Entertaining thoughts.

Gaming the algo will always be at the top of the list for some, while the rest will play somewhere in the gray and attempt to extract as much profit from Google's "opinions" as possible.

I side with you, Google, don't do it!!

Enjoyed the rant Sebastian! I think regardless people are still going to be able to game this new algo no matter how much Google tries to fix the loopholes. I think it was pretty smart for them to react so fast to this especially during the holiday season. If they delayed this would have looked like there was no one behind the wheel over there and I doubt that's how they want to be betrayed to all the retailers and biz owners who rely heavily on the shopping results for their business.

Thanks, Mike. That's exactly why this piece became a rant instead of a boring factual post, too technical and dull as dust.

Vladimir, I totally agree that it was a great piece of engineering. As for Google handling the mainstream press, I do hope they learn fast. They used to ignore incorrect or misleading "news", just because "the real geeks know". About time to discover that the majority of their users can't even spell "geek".

John, Google's search engine isn't crappy. Of course there are search queries that result in somewhat crappy, spammy, questionable or funny SERPs. If you aren't happy with particular results, why not create some compelling content and get it ranked? Or at least make use of the feedback form. From your link I assume you're new to search, and SEO. I think it would make sense to learn more about it before making such bold statements. They won't gain you respect or authority unless they're substantial, based on knowledge and experience. I wish you all the best for your career in SEO.

Also, I want to point to John Battelle's piece <a href="http://battellemedia.com/archives/2010/12/in_googles_opinion.php">In Google's Opinion....</a> where <a href="http://mattcutts.com/blog/">Matt Cutts</a> did a good job explaining the reasoning behind the new filter in the comments. Matt discussed the case in a <a href="http://twit.tv/twig71" title="This Week In Google 71: rel nofollow">video</a>, too (requires Quicktime).

Google has some issues in their algorithem. They have issues in their product search and also in the web search. Try to search for a "song about london". Trust me there is maybe 1 result that sends to a song about london.

You raised a good point and I hope they are working on improving their crappy search engine

It is actually surprising that Google reacted on something so fast, especially when it comes to changing their search algorithm. Notice the tone of their statement too, it is written for ordinary users not webmaster.

Seems like they are becoming more sensitive to the critique of their service.

Very interesting devil's advocate take on the NYT article and google's actions. I think most people are applauding what Google has done but you raise some really good and valid points.
